What Is Necessary Comforts For, Anyway?
When I came home from my mastectomy I had drains coming out of my body. No one had told me that this would be the case. I was in pain from the surgery, and the pulling and tugging of the drains every time I moved added to that pain. I wanted to shower to prevent any infection from gaining a foothold, so I put my drains into a bowl. I tried to shower and hold the bowl but it just wasn’t working. A friend saw me struggling and got into my sewing basket and whipped up the first Necessary Comforts drain apron. It helped to support the weight of the drain bulbs so the tubes weren’t pulling and tugging all the time anymore. It was one less thing to worry about during my recovery.
Once I recovered from my ten surgeries, I decided that no one else should ever have to be stuck with drain bulbs pulling and tugging all the time. I founded Necessary Comforts™ to help patients recover as comfortably as possible.
Now, people write to me all the time to tell me the new and unique ways that they have found to use my Necessary Comforts Post Surgical Drain Garment. Just the other day a woman wrote to me to say she tied the Necessary Comforts garment to her walker after showering in order to quick-dry it. She’d been wearing it nonstop after her Whipple procedure!
I’ve also heard from a patient who has to wear her drains and catheters from a different procedure indefinitely, so she added some fleece padding to the inside of my Necessary Comforts Post Surgical Drain Garment. This alteration was both to cushion her skin from the irritation she was getting from the drain bulbs rubbing up against her skin constantly and to make the pockets smaller so the drain bulbs would fit more securely inside the pocket. We love to hear how our customers are putting their comfort first!
Necessity really is the mother of invention, and that’s why I started manufacturing this product in the first place.
